A New Diagnosis

"Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever."  Hebrews 13:8

I love being on a boat. There is something about being on the water that is both exhilarating and calming: the wind, the expanse of sky, the beauty of it all. But I have had those moments when the waves were just a little too big and the motion a little too much. When seasickness sets in, they say the first thing to do is to keep your eyes fixed on the horizon. The waves and boat will toss and pitch, but the horizon remains steady. It becomes a point of stability.

The same is true in life. When we are tossed by the ever-changing waves and storms of life, we just need to keep our focus on the Lord. He sets our perspective. He quells our sickness.

From April 28 to July 4, the facts of my physical situation changed quite a bit. I tried to stay steady by keeping my eyes on Him through it all. My seeking Him, along with an abundance of prayer, kept me at peace beyond understanding. He is my reliable foundation in a shifting world. What remains the same about God is His character and nature, His steadfast love and sovereignty over all.

MY TIMELINE:

April 28: Surgery and initial pathology reveal borderline/pre cancer

May 4: Official pathology report (from independent lab – not UAB) says I have a high-grade serous cancer, probably stage 2.

May 16: Oncologist scopes my abdomen to confirm advanced disease consistent with high grade diagnosis, staging me at 3c/possibly 4.

May 18: Women pray over me. Lots of praying for healing happening, a humbling amount.

June 9: Chemo Treatment #2. Oncologist tells me that the molecular study of my tumor has come back revealing some inconsistencies with high-grade cancer. We need to have UAB do another pathology report.

I have been praying to be healed. I also have been praying that God would do something in my case that could not be attributed to anything but Him. I want clear scans, but I don’t want it to be just because the chemo did its job. I want God to get the credit. I had no idea what that might be, but I prayed for it anyway. Something positive and inexplicable. Some sign to all that God is really the one in control.

And then the next fact change came. One that was not expected at all.

July 2: News from the oncologist that my cancer is NOT high-grade. It is confirmed to be LOW-GRADE! PRAISE THE LORD!!! A slow-growing, more manageable kind of cancer. My staging is 3c.

A different kind of cancer – by all accounts, a better kind. Unexplainable. Maybe human error in the initial report, but still we know what Jehovah Rapha is capable of doing. He never changes, but He is sovereign over all and one word from Him is all it takes.

The truth is that He changed my diagnosis the day He died on the cross. He changed the diagnosis for us ALL!

"For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed."Malachi 3:6

"Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change." James 1:17

"In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.
26 They will perish, but you remain;
they will all wear out like a garment.
Like clothing you will change them
    and they will be discarded.
27 But you remain the same,
and your years will never end." Psalm 102:25-27

PRAYER

El Olam, the Everlasting God, creator of all, we praise you for your unchanging nature. We know that the world around us is not our stability, but You are. You are our rock, our foundation. You alone remain steadfast and true. And that means that the same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead is alive in me. Thank you for seeing us and for hearing our prayers. Thank you that you are sovereign over all, the ultimate authority. Amen.
