## Surgery Day

Matthew 6:8 “. . . For your Father knows what you need before you ask him.”

I am writing this the day before my surgery. I have spent the last month preparing myself in whatever limited ways I can. I have walked every day; my diet has been clean and healthy (except for those times I thought I deserved a little ice cream), and, most importantly, I have been in the Word and in prayer regularly.

I don’t mean for that to sound like I’ve just been happily checking off my “to do” list as though I’m getting ready for a party. It has not been a party. Anticipation of something fun is one thing; anticipation of something . . . not so fun, is a whole different ballgame. I’ve had all the emotions that go along with that kind of anticipation, and I have brought every one of those to the Lord.

Now it’s time for the doctors and staff to do what is in their power. The surgery is called a debulking surgery. My oncologist, who is also the surgeon, will make a vertical midline incision from breastbone to pubic bone. All hopes of a two-piece will be gone forever. ;) She will open my abdomen, search for whatever cancer she can find, and remove it. Seek and Destroy! She will be assisted by other doctors from other disciplines who can help moving certain organs out of the way, if needed. She will stitch me back up, and I am expected to stay in the hospital a few days before going home. That’s her plan.

Before, during and after all of this is the Lord’s plan. In my Bible I have written these words at the top of the page of Psalm 139, “I love this one!!! The Lord knows me fully - and loves me anyway!”

All that is really needed for this post is Psalm 139 in its entirety. I hope it is a reminder to anyone who reads it that you are fully known and loved by the God Almighty who created you with intention and for a purpose.

**Psalm 139**

**1** You have searched me, Lord,  
 and you know me.  
**2** You know when I sit and when I rise;  
 you perceive my thoughts from afar.  
**3** You discern my going out and my lying down;  
 you are familiar with all my ways.  
**4** Before a word is on my tongue  
 you, Lord, know it completely.  
**5** You hem me in behind and before,  
 and you lay your hand upon me.  
**6** Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,  
 too lofty for me to attain.

**7** Where can I go from your Spirit?  
 Where can I flee from your presence?  
**8** If I go up to the heavens, you are there;  
 if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.  
**9** If I rise on the wings of the dawn,  
 if I settle on the far side of the sea,  
**10** even there your hand will guide me,  
 your right hand will hold me fast.  
**11** If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me  
 and the light become night around me,”  
**12** even the darkness will not be dark to you;  
 the night will shine like the day,  
 for darkness is as light to you.

**13** For you created my inmost being;  
 you knit me together in my mother’s womb.  
**14** I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;  
 your works are wonderful,  
 I know that full well.  
**15** My frame was not hidden from you  
 when I was made in the secret place,  
 when I was woven together in the depths of the earth.  
**16** Your eyes saw my unformed body;  
 all the days ordained for me were written in your book  
 before one of them came to be.  
**17** How precious to me are your thoughts, God!  
 How vast is the sum of them!  
**18** Were I to count them,  
 they would outnumber the grains of sand—  
 when I awake, I am still with you.

**19** If only you, God, would slay the wicked!  
 Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty!  
**20** They speak of you with evil intent;  
 your adversaries misuse your name.  
**21** Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord,  
 and abhor those who are in rebellion against you?  
**22** I have nothing but hatred for them;  
 I count them my enemies.  
**23** Search me, God, and know my heart;  
 test me and know my anxious thoughts.  
**24** See if there is any offensive way in me,  
 and lead me in the way everlasting.

 NOTE: You may be wondering why, in the midst of this beautiful verse, David, the author of this Psalm, breaks out into a mini-rant about his enemies. I almost omitted verses 19-22 just to focus on the beautiful words, but those verses reflect true human emotions. David had hate in his heart for God’s enemies whom he also saw as his own. In verse 23, he asks God to search his heart for any offensive ways. He doesn’t hold back. He brings ALL his human emotions to the Lord and asks Him to sort them out. We can do the same. We can bring to the feet of Jesus our fear, our anger, our confusion, every bit of it, and ask Him to help us sort it all out. In the end, He will always lead us to the “way everlasting.”

**Another suggestion: open your Bible and read Psalm 91\. Read it more than once. Meditate on it. Put your name in it; it is for you.**

 “*I will say of the Lord, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.*’” Psalm 91:2

**PRAYER**

Let the Psalms above be our prayer today. Amen
